The Power of Full Engagement: Managing Energy, Not Time, is the Key to Performance, Health and Happiness

| Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz, 2003

What’s It All About?

No matter how hard we try, we can’t control the amount of time we have available to us each day. But there is still something we can control: our energy! In The Power of Full Engagement: Managing Energy, Not Time, is the Key to Performance, Health, and Happiness, authors Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz present powerful, practical strategies for harnessing your energy, maximizing your energy output, and creating energy-management rituals that can transform your life.

The book was recommended to me by my physiotherapist in Louisville, Kentucky, and it did not disappoint! I loved how the book lived up to its title, and found it full of great lessons on managing energy, cultivating value in your work, and shifting your approach to energy to find healthier, happier, and more productive outcomes, both on the manufacturing floor and in your personal life.

Favorite Quote

“To be fully engaged, we must be physically energized, emotionally connected, mentally focused and spiritually aligned with a purpose beyond our immediate self-interest.”

Biggest Takeaway

Are you creating value or just filling deficits? If you’re spending your days addressing emergencies or responding to day-to-day urgencies, you’re not creating value. When this happens, it’s easy to lose yourself and your sense of connection to your work, which impacts your ability to show up for your team.

To realign yourself with your values and change how you expend your energy, ask yourself these questions:

  1. At the end of my life, what would I recap as the three most important lessons I’ve learned?
  2. What are the three main qualities of someone I admire?
  3. What line would be on my tombstone?

By asking yourself deep and curious questions like these, you’ll tap into your true values and can use this realignment to seek out creative, fulfilling ways to use your energy.
