Emotional Intelligence 2.0

| Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves, 2009

What’s It All About?

In our busy and modern lives, we all want to manage, adapt, and stand out from the competition—and emotional intelligence is the tool we need! In Emotional Intelligence 2.0 by Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves, you’ll learn about the four main foundations for emotional intelligence:

  • Self-awareness. Are you conscious of how you respond to situations?
  • Self-management. Can you effectively manage yourself and your emotions?
  • Social awareness. When you walk into a room full of people, can you pick up on the mood?
  • Relationship management. Can you respond based on the needs of your audience?

This book is broken into personal (self-awareness and self-management) and social (social awareness and relationship management) competence. For all four of these points, the book includes actionable strategies you can use to develop your emotional intelligence skills.

The book also comes with a survey, which you can use to identify your areas of improvement. I’d recommend taking the survey before reading the book, then taking it after you finish the book and put some of its strategies to use, so you can see how your emotional intelligence has improved.

Favorite Quote

“Rather than avoiding a feeling, your goal should be to move toward the emotion, into it, and eventually through it.”

Biggest Takeaway

This is the book that started it all for me! When I first read it around 2014, I was disconnected from who I really was and lacking in how I showed up. I dismissed emotions and in my type-A personality fashion, could be seen as a bull in a China shop by others. While I was accomplishing many goals, I also created carnage throughout the process. Like the quote, I would NOT choose to lean into an emotion, because I didn’t know how to or didn’t feel comfortable. And as a result, I’d never really grew.

While I’m not proud of my past behavior, it did play a huge role in shaping who I am today, and the lessons and strategies in Emotional Intelligence 2.0 helped me get on a path to improving my behavior and how I showed up for others. It gave me the ability to tap into what was already inside of me, and gave me the boost and belief I needed to work toward more emotional intelligence.
