Why Your Team Lacks Motivation — And How You Can Improve It

Motivated teams don’t have to be a myth. With the right mindset and cultural changes, any leader can cultivate a motivated and engaged team.

Three Strategies for Building Engagement and Driving Motivation

#1. Inspire Others to Motivate Themselves

While you can’t always motivate others, you can create a workplace environment where everyone feels inspired to motivate themselves. To do this, you need to create a culture where people feel empowered and inspired. In turn, this will encourage them to show up as their best selves. It also creates an environment where everyone feels enabled to find their own unique motivator, which creates more sustainable and powerful processes.

#2. Use Communication to Shape Workplace Culture

As a leader, it’s easy to fall into a habit of telling others what to do. But when you only focus on telling, it leaves little room for your team to voice their own ideas and feedback—which can leave them feel unsupported and unmotivated. Instead of telling others what to do, shift to an approach that allows for more collaboration and listening.

Simple acts, like positive reinforcement and expressing genuine gratitude, can also unlock engagement and drive motivation.

#3. Approach Problems with Curiosity, Not Judgement

In manufacturing, breakdowns and issues are the norm—but how you react can make or break your team’s motivation. The next time an issue occurs, avoid the instinct to respond with a judgmental question, like “why didn’t you do this?” Instead, show appreciation for your team member’s effort and stay curious about what caused the issue.

Through this approach, you’ll open yourself up to creative solutions and collaboration conversations, while creating an environment that fosters learning, accountability, and continuous improvement.
